"To be a good impact lawyer, you must first learn how to be a good lawyer."

I have experience working in the private, NGO, government, and academic sectors. But the through-line of my legal career has been to use the law as a powerful means for advancing positive social good. Good lawyering means finding solutions that are practical. To do that, I understand the importance of asking smart questions to better define the problem, and then not being afraid to push conventional thinking to drive better results.

I grew up in Kansas with global aspirations. After law school, I joined White & Case LLP as a project finance associate in New York. During that time is when I first got involved in the nascent impact investing and social enterprise space. I then moved in-house as the first general counsel of Ashoka: Innovators for the Public, an international NGO known for starting the modern social entrepreneurship movement. While there, I helped launch the Grunin Center for Law and Social Entrepreneurship at NYU Law, the first center of its kind at any law school. I later joined USAID where I worked in both Washington, DC and abroad. I also taught a course on law, impact investing, and social enterprise over nine years at Georgetown Law. Most recently, I was posted in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where I served as USAID's supervisory foreign service lawyer.
